Dexters

The Landor Stud’s Dexter cattle stud was established in 2020 consisting of four young stud registered heifer cows. Shortly after arrival the first Dexter bull calf was born named Licorice.

The Dexter cattle breed is a dual cattle breed producing milk and meat. The breed is of small to medium build, extremely easy to handle and consume up to 30% less grazing than medium to large framed cattle maintaining themselves. To put this in a better perspective you can carry three adult Dexter cattle vs two medium to large build cattle on the same area of grazing. The Dexter cattle breed are hardy animals and easy to keep.
The genetic pool of Dexter cattle in South Africa is very small in relation to the more commercial cattle breeds, this creating the opportunity to breed with selective genetic material and new bloodlines for future breed development and value via frozen semen artificial insemination.

There is also a great demand for Dexter cattle for the small-scale farmer and small holder owner that just want some cattle to milk and keep the grass short, not to mention the incredible cute factor of this incredible breed.

Our vision for the Landor Stud’s Dexter herd is to build the herd up to a sustainable healthy productive herd with an inter-calf period of less than 360 days and a calf weaning weight at 270 days of more than 50% of the mother cow weight with a 98% weaning rate. Each cow should produce a healthy calf a year.
